What is the Working Mind?

The Working Mind (TWM) is an evidence-informed training program developed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) designed to reduce stigma, increase mental health awareness, and promote psychological safety in the workplace.

This program helps employees, leaders, and organizations recognize signs of mental distress, build resilience, and create supportive environments where mental health is treated with the same importance as physical health. Participants walk away with practical tools to support their own well-being, better respond to others, and foster a culture of openness and support across all levels of an organization.

Whether you're a people leader or team member, TWM offers a clear, compassionate, and actionable approach to improving mental health at work.

EFFECTIVE LEARNING CURRICULUM

Module 1

Mental Health Stigma

Examine concepts of mental health and discuss the impacts of stigma on individuals living with mental health or substance use problems.

Module 2

Mental Health Continuum Tool

Use the Mental Health Continuum Tool to notice changes in mental health and well-being of yourself and others. Discuss how to have conversations with others about mental health.

Module 3

Stress & Resilience

Explore the impacts of stress on mental health, and practice applying the Big 4 Coping Strategies- simple but proven tools to deal with stress effectively and remain resilient.

Module 4

Supporting Your Team

Practice skills to support team’s mental health and well-being. Review appropriate actions to take in each colour zone of the Mental Health Continuum and to address related to critical incidents and supporting employees.

Sheema Khan is a Registered Psychotherapist and former corporate leader with over 20 years of experience in corporate sales & marketing. Now working at the intersection of mental health and business, she is passionate about bringing psychological safety, emotional intelligence, and trauma-informed practices into the workplace.

With a deep commitment to equity and inclusion, Sheema supports organizations that want to move from awareness to impact when it comes to mental health and employee wellbeing.

Jackie Onyszko, CRSP is a Certified Facilitator with The Working Mind, a Canadian Registered Safety Professional, and holds a certificate in psychological safety.

With nearly 20 years of experience in occupational health and safety, she supports leaders in building practical, people-first programs that promote both compliance and mental well-being. Jackie’s sessions focus on early intervention, empathetic leadership, and creating psychologically safe workplaces where teams can thrive.

What is the TWM Program

The Working Mind is an evidence-based mental health training program developed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC). It aims to reduce stigma, increase awareness, and equip individuals and organizations with practical tools to support mental health and resilience in the workplace.

Who is this program for?

TWM is designed for:

  • Employees: To help recognize and manage mental health in themselves and others.

  • People Leaders (Managers/Supervisors): To build supportive leadership skills and create a mentally healthy work environment.

  • Specialized Audiences: Adaptations are also available for first responders, healthcare workers, post-secondary staff/students, and more.

How long is the training?

The full program can be delivered in one full day (6-8 hours) or split across two half-days, virtually.

For leadership groups, an extended version includes modules on communication, accommodation, and performance support.

Who delivers the training?

Certified TWM facilitators—like Sheema & Jackie —deliver the program. All facilitators are trained by the MHCC and bring a blend of clinical insight, facilitation skills, and lived/workplace experience.

Is there a certificate provided?

Yes. Participants receive a certificate of completion from the Mental Health Commission of Canada once they finish the full training.

How many participants are required to schedule a private group session?

Private group sessions require 8 people. Maximum number of participants in each group is 15.
